Wedding Day: Pre-ceremony
The week of my wedding, my Abuela (my grandmother on my mom’s side) fell and broke her hip. She had to have surgery and could no longer travel up from Miami. Her health has been declining over the past year and before her fall, I just prayed that she’d make it to the day. I was heartbroken. She was heartbroken.  She even tried to bribe the doctor and nurses into letting her go and having the surgery after the wedding.
Abuela is one of the most important people in my life. Even though she lives in Miami, I have never felt a time when she wasn’t there to celebrate anything important going on in my life. She’s never missed a birthday and has been there for every graduation. I was the first grandchild to be married.
I was so sad and disappointed that Abuela wasn’t going to be there to see me marry the man of my dreams. I even was going to have my photographer take a photo of my hand, my mother’s hand and my Abuela’s hand together.
My matron of honor knew how much it meant for me to have her there and had arranged a phone call with Abuela at her rehab facility. The above photo was during my conversation with her. The moment I heard her voice I started to break down, as did she.
Abuela doesn’t speak English well, so she spoke in Spanish the entire time and even though I didn’t catch everything she said to me, her advice to me was to always put my relationship with Wes first. We were a family now and as long as we put each other first, we had nothing to worry about.
